Eskimo Life

Designed By Holly Craft

Create a fun Alaskan scene to warm your heart during the long winter months. We’ve included an igloo, polar bear, moose, and dogsledding Eskimos! This is a project the whole family can enjoy making to enjoy each winter for years to come.

Skill level: NONE

Step: 1

Bead Colors/Quantity Needed:

  • Creme - 5
  • Gold Metallic - 36
  • Tan - 18
  • Light Brown - 85
  • Brown - 551
  • Grey - 1760
  • Black - 5
  • White - 2902

NOTE: You will need 3 bags of white beads, 2 bags of grey beads, and 1 bag of each of the other colors. See the Supply List for beads and tools you can purchase here. You will also need:

  • Quick-drying adhesive
  • Twine or string
  • Tan yarn
  • Needle
Step: 2

Download the Eskimo Life Project Pattern. Use the large circle, large square and large heart pegboards for your project. If you’re using a clear pegboard, slide the actual-size pattern underneath it. Place all the beads for the design.

Step: 3

Ask an adult to fuse your designs. Place your pegboard on a flat, heat-safe surface. Set a household iron to the medium setting. Place ironing paper over the pegboard. In a circular motion, begin to iron the project. When ironed properly, the beads will still have open centers. Let the design cool.

Step: 4

Remove the paper and bead design from the pegboard. Flip the design over to expose the non-fused side. Repeat step two. Let cool completely. Once the design is cool, peel off the ironing paper. Your pegboards and ironing paper are reusable.

Note: Beads need heat for about 10-20 seconds per side to fuse evenly. Lift the paper occasionally to see how the beads are fusing. Sometimes additional heating time may be required. Since you are working on a 3-D project, DO NOT OVER-IRON the beads as it will make the centers of the beads close and can make assembly more challenging.

Step: 5

ASSEMBLY: Dogsled and Eskimos: Use the yarn and needle to add “fur” to the Eskimos’ hoods by working through the bead holes. Use twine or string to add the harness and reins for the dog as shown in the photo. Insert the dog, sled, and the standing Eskimo’s one foot in the slots in the snow base.

Step: 6

Polar Bear: Turn the leg pieces at right angles to the body piece. Align the slots of the leg pieces to the body and slide together. Glue the head onto the angled edge of the body.

Step: 7

Moose: Assemble in the same way as the Polar Bear.

Step: 8

Igloo Door: Align and glue the layers in the following order:

  • 3 of Piece A
  • 1 of Piece B
  • All 3 of Piece C
  • 1 of Piece B
  • 3 of Piece A
Step: 9

Igloo Room: The Igloo Room is constructed by gluing the layers starting from the bottom and working to the top. Align the layers to be centered on top of each other in order, and aligned for the door opening. After you have completed the door opening, the layers above that should be rotated so the vertical grey lines are offset as shown in the photograph.
