Cookie Cutter Melty Bead Ornaments
Designed By Lennis Rodriguez
Melty bead ornaments are fun and easy to create with whatever beads you have on hand. Finish in the cookie cutter or without it for a more free-form look. Just add a ribbon hanger and they are ready to hang on the tree, a wreath, or attach to a gift.
You will need:
- Your favorite bead colors or bead mix—see the Shopping List for the colors we used
- Standard oven
- Cookie sheet
- Parchment paper
- Metal cookie cutters* for finishing
- Cooking spray
- Popsicle stick
*You can re-use the cookie cutters for more ornaments, but we do not recommend re-using them for making cookies.
Download the PDF for the Cookie Cutter Melty Bead Ornaments Project Sheet if you would like to print a copy of these instructions with large photos. Gather all your materials, and choose the bead colors you want to use for the cookie cutter shapes you have selected. It takes very few beads to create the ornaments.
Cut a piece of parchment paper to cover the cookie sheet and place the cookie cutters on top. Apply cooking spray to the cookie cutters as follows: If you intend to remove the ornament from the cookie cutter for finishing, spray thoroughly; if you plan to finish your ornament with the cookie cutter attached, spray very lightly.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Remember, an adult should do all steps involving the oven and handling of the hot cookie sheet. Place beads inside the cookie cutters making sure to create just a single layer. Use the popsicle stick to help position the beads.
Finish adding the beads to all the cookie cutters you are using—don't forget, just a single layer! Otherwise, the beads will not melt properly. If desired, add a tiny pinch of glitter here and there for sparkle.
Into the oven they go! Bake for 10 minutes. Note: The intention is not to melt the beads flat. Some colors melt at different rates than others because of the color pigments used, so the appearance will be textured and varied which adds to the appeal!
After 10 minutes, an adult should remove the cookie sheet to a safe cooling area. Some beads will have flattened a bit, some stretched into fun shapes—cool, huh?
Let the ornaments and cookie cutters cool completely before handling. If you are removing the ornaments from the cutters, do so gently. Whether you finish the ornaments in or out of the cookie cutters, you can slip an end of ribbon through a gap in the beads to make the hanger.
